WildFit Challenge – Week 9 & 10 – Yah Still Spring

Nothing much to report here really, still in deep spring on the WildFit Challenge, still avoiding all middle vegetables (including carrots, red peppers, root vegetables, sweet potato etc).

It’s getting easier as time goes on, and we quite enjoy it. It makes grocery shopping really easy, cooking is simpler and less messy (no sticky sugar residue anywhere) and washing up is really easy (fringe benefits of eating like this haha).

It may seem a little more costly at first as you have to buy some new stuff (Aminos, organic balsamic, good oils etc) but after that, it’s pretty much cheaper all the time with very little eating out (Expensive!) and no snacking, junk food or cakes (really Expensive!).

Week 9

We still regularly eat out (At least one a week) and always at Nando’s haha, safest place in the mall. Whole chicken, plain flavour, 4 grilled veges with no carrots.

Liam can eat a whole quarter chicken by himself now (taken off the bone of course).

Liam at Nando's

data-ad-slot="4241120045"
data-ad-format="auto">

And then after that he can polish off a whole bowl of peri fries, what a beast. And sometimes he’ll ask for some ‘trees’ too (aka Broccoli).

We did manage to find somewhere else to eat out finally haha, Opika in 1 Utama – an organic market and restaurant. They have some great gluten-free cakes too and the food is really nice and reasonably priced.

Opika 1 Utama

They were really cool too, I messed up my order as I thought it came with sweet potato mash, but I read it wrongly, it was actually sweet basil and potato mash – but they were super cool and changed out the potatoes for me to sweet potatoes with no charge and no fuss.

Opika - 1 Utama - Meatballs

It was delicious, and on diet (if you’re in summer, which I wasn’t but hey you gotta have some leeway).

And yah, we folded and had some cake to feed our Candida haha. It was incredibly delicious and mostly guilt free (gluten and dairy free).

data-ad-slot="4241120045"
data-ad-format="auto">

Really nice cake!

Week 10

Nando’s again of course haha, here’s our full order (plus 2 bottles of water).

Nandos Again!

It’s actually pretty easy to eat clean at Nandos, it’s a tasting and satisfying meal, totally on diet with no guilt! And for the portion sizes, pretty decently priced.

I find myself constantly judging people in Nandos now though, with 1/4 chicken, double carbs (chips and rice) and no veges in sight. It’s a healthy place to eat only if you choose it to be, otherwise, it can be just as bad as anywhere else – it comes down the choices YOU personally make each day and each and every meal.

I was starting to show real signs up weight loss and was able to wear old clothes I haven’t worn in 4-5 years (that were tight then) and have them be pretty loose.

Wearing Old Clothes

Time to start shopping for some new stuff I reckon!

Week 9 & 10 Summary

So yah, not too hard really, still having delicious meals, bitter green smoothies each morning (about 32oz or 1L each) and not going hungry ever.

I’m keeping up some moderate excercise with Couch to 5k and doing some push-ups too, to build my upper body strength, core and give me some toning.

We will keep going in deep spring as it’s working well, we feel very focused, very energetic and are doing great. Up to date I’ve lost about 12kg (around 26lbs) on WildFit and in total since June I’ve lost around 20kg (around 44lbs) including losing around 5% body fat (still a long way to go with that one haha).

To summarise:

– Drink more water (at least 6-8 large glasses a day)

– Drink the Alkagizer Prime every day (no fruits)

– Add an EXTRA portion of vegetables at every meal

– Continue removing refined sugars

– Continue removing all grains (rice, wheat etc) and white potato

– Continue removing dairy (and all byproducts)

– Continue to remove Food additives, Nicotine, Alcohol and Caffeine

– Continue to Remove fruits, sweet vegetables, beans and honey

Food wise, no changes, remember the tips if you are struggling with the switch and energy (more good fats, plenty of salt etc) and keep on in WildFit Spring!

Who censored David Davies’ Wikipedia profile anonymously?

[24 April 2017 – Someone’s still at it. See full update at end of post.]

You may recall David Davies being in the news a few weeks back. Then again, you may not, and given the reason why he was in the news at the time, he’d probably prefer it that way:

Independent (19 October) – Dentists condemn MP’s call for child refugees from Calais to have teeth checked

I know that someone didn’t like this highlighted text being in his Wikipedia profile. It was removed on 21 October.

'When, in October 2016, the UK admitted 15 children from the camp with a legal right to travel to the UK, he asserted without foundation that all were actually adults lying about their ages.'

This highlighted text was also removed at the same time, by the same editor.

'He defended himself against accusations of homophobia by saying that he could not be homophobic as he had once punched a gay man.'

The person who made these edits made them anoymously, and offered no reason/justification for the removal of the highlighted text; presumably, they just didn’t like what they were reading in Wikipedia, so they removed it.

The only clue left behind by the anonymous editor was an IP address, which doesn’t always reveal much on its own… but by sheer chance I had emailed David Davies at around this same time, and the exact same IP address turned up among the recipients.

So I emailed David Davies about this edit, and made it very clear that it could be demonstrated that either he or a member of his staff had edited Wikipedia anonymously in his favour.

David Davies’ response? Well, he didn’t have one.

I made it very clear that if he had no knowledge of the edit and/or wanted to investigate the matter, then he should have the opportunity to look into it and any subsequent article should reflect that.

Instead, David Davies chose to say/do nothing and just wait for it all to blow over for reasons we can only guess at.

I leave you with that mystery and the questions that David Davies chose not to answer:

How often do you and your staff edit Wikipedia anonymously?

:

How often have you personally edited this page anonymously?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Davies_(Welsh_politician)

:

How often do you personally edit other pages anonymously?

:

Assuming you are willing to admit to anonymous edits, how do you defend this action, given that (a) Wikipedia is meant to be a neutral reference site, not a PR site containing only things that you approve of, and (b) MPs are meant to hold to high standards of transparency and accountability?

Of course, I will be sure to update this article if David Davies suddenly thinks of a response to all of this six weeks after the event, but personally I don’t expect much from anonymous cowards and/or MPs who use them to protect their reputations, and neither should you.

[NOTE – I emailed David Davies about the issue of party-political bullying. He declined to comment very clearly on the grounds that it was not a constituency issue.]

UPDATE (24 April 2017) – Since I wrote this article, there have been further multiple anonymous attempts to remove all mention of controversy from the Wikipedia profile of David Davies (link).

Wikipedia discussion about edits of page of David Davies

You can read what Wikipedia editors wrote about their concerns (and how that conversation develops) here, but to be clear on this point for any new readers:

I do not edit Wikipedia under any name, and I do not advise that you go rushing in there in response to any of this, either. It is far preferable that an experienced editor with no dog in the race handle the problem.

That said, you may want to look at the ‘Talk’ and ‘View History’ links on the profile page of your local MP/candidate today and see if this snap election hasn’t prompted a few nervous edits. There are many MPs who struggle to understand the difference between an election pamphlet and something that is supposed to be reference material, and any MP who conspires to secretly censor their own Wikipedia entry clearly struggles with wider issues such as honesty, integrity, accountability, and democracy.

By now it can be demonstrated that David Davies is one such MP: even if he avoided making the edits himself, he was advised of anonymous edits in his favour involving an IP address used by his office/staff months ago, and chose to ignore the issue.

WildFit has changed me so much (totally changed our lives in fact) and I had a bit of a milestone today – I managed to buy a pair of Uniqlo jeans – which means I no longer have to wear ‘fat man’ clothes (which my wife calls choosing between ugly shirt A or ugly shirt B) and I can wear things I want to wear as I can fit in regular sizes on normal shops now – so I’m SUPER happy about that.

Anyway, I decided to try something else new as well, which is vlogging – many people asked about how to make Mayonnaise so that’s my first video, if you are interested in this kinda thing and more WildFit/Paleo/Whole30 compliant tips and recipes (nut butter, pickles, pancakes, deep fried oysters etc) tune in.

WildFit Challenge – Week 7 & 8 – Staying In Spring

Into WildFit Challenge week 7 we go (and week 8 really as they are pretty much the same). Honestly being in Spring gets easier and easier and week 7 is significantly better than week 6 (which is by FAR the hardest week of all) and then 8 is better than 7 and so on.

So yeah, things were going well – during week 7 I was down to about 119kg which is around 6kg down from the start of WildFit when I was 125kg.

Week 7

Spring is actually not too difficult, especially for us as we both enjoy cooking, we have the equipment, the tools and the skills to cook tasty food within the constraints of Spring.

The only really danger in Spring is boredom, I don’t really feel hungry, my energy is stabilised and I find eating much more salt helps (ketosis is diuretic and fat stores a lot of water and mineral content) so 3-5 grams a day is good (high quality pink Himalayan salt or unprocessed sea salt).

We had some amazing meals nevertheless.

Paleo Ikan Bakar (yes you can find chili boh and sambal with no sugar).

Paleo Ikan Bakar

style="display:block"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-3033787195489589"
data-ad-slot="4241120045"
data-ad-format="auto">

Served with cauliflower and broccoli rice of course (our go-to for Asian food).

Yah I was in a spicy, Asian food mood haha – one of my favourites – Petai Prawns!

Paleo Petai Prawns

We also found a great and completely compliant place to eat out – Chimichurri Jaya One. They have 2 really nice dressings without sugar and you can assemble your meal to be completely spring/paleo compliant.

Chimichurri Jaya One

More Asian food haha, this is something we have every week now seen as though we shop at NSK every Sunday night we grab a lovely fresh Siakap and steam it or oven bake it with ginger, garlic, chilis and some coconut aminos or Bragg’s aminos.

Paleo Steamed Fish

Week 8

style="display:block"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-3033787195489589"
data-ad-slot="4241120045"
data-ad-format="auto">

We had another go at eating out at a place called Goodness Greens Cafe in TTDI, not even gonna talk about that as I had a bad experience and won’t be going back. Basically, a place that’s pretending to be healthy-ish – but really isn’t and has NO Dressings on the menu without some form of sugar (apart from plain olive oil, which I ended up having to have).

Bah Kuh Teh with konyaku noodles. If you have noodle cravings, these will be your saviour. In the US they sold as Miracle noodles or something like that, basically carb free, zero calorie noodles. 97% water and some undigestible fibre.

BKT with Konyaku Noodles.jpg

There’s no real secret to this phase, or staying in Spring other than to keep yourself fed well, make the effort to shop – learn to cook better and be creative.

Google whatever you want to eat + Paleo and then adapt it to fit in Spring.

Honestly don’t have a whole lot of meal pictures after this point as it stopped being a novelty and just started being how we eat every day, we don’t feel hungry, we have amazing energy, we sleep great and even when we don’t sleep that long we don’t feel tired all day.

Cravings are 99% gone (the odd devil conversation does pop-up now and then).

Pretty amazing really.

Buying some Ketostix – Ketone Measurement Sticks

This is also the stage when you want to know if you are entering Ketosis. So I bought some Ketostix aka Ketone sticks to test how I was doing, apparently, I was doing great (or not depending on how much you read..).

Ketone Sticks Malaysia

I bought the Sensatest Ketone Urine Reagent Strips 100 Strips from Lazada.

So yah, definitely in Ketosis, in optional nutritional ketosis? Probably not – but on the way for sure! It’s good to have a sign that we were doing the right thing. Now you have to understand Ketone urine reagent strips and that they measure what equates to excess ketones and also don’t measure the type of ketones you produce when you are fully keto or fat adapted.

So they are a very blunt tool. If you want an accurate measurement you need to do a blood test with something like the Precision Xtra NFR Blood Glucose Monitoring System – but that’s a step too far for me.

You can read this to understand more:

Week 7 & 8 Summary

style="display:block"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-3033787195489589"
data-ad-slot="4241120045"
data-ad-format="auto">

This is the time to buckle down, get into a rhythm and commit to doing this for as long as you need to. We surprisingly didn’t struggle too much, of course, cravings hit us hard sometimes – and we succumbed to some compliant as possible treats from time to time (almond coconut cookies and similar).

We ate a lot, made sure we had plenty of variety and still ate out at least once a week (our weekly Nando’s outing – a whole chicken with 4 portions of grilled vegetables, no carrots).

With the odd other meal at Paleolicious, ChimiChurri or sometimes we had to make do with whatever was available that was most supportive of our health (Subway salad is an option).

This is also a great time to start working out with a little more intention, which is why I started back up my Couch to 5k training.

The Entrepreneur Fighting the Snoopers’ Charter in the UK With a Privacy-Protecting Web Browser

Alex Kontos is developing a web browser with a focus on privacy (Si Gross/Epoch Times)

Edward Snowden’s GCHQ and NSA leaks in 2013 prompted people to think differently about their personal privacy. It was revealed that telephone recordings, emails, and instant messages were being collected en masse.

Surveillance in the digital age is unsettling, but privacy advocates are increasingly frustrated that many people seem not to care.

“It’s a hard sell to people to say, ‘care about what you do on the Internet’,” admitted tech entrepreneur Alex Kontos. “But it’s good to have freedom on the Internet.”

The 22-year-old is developing an alternative web browser called Aegis that focuses on the user’s online privacy. He says he’s not looking to “re-invent the wheel” but is ardent about providing a free and open web, particularly in an era where the end user often becomes the product. To protect user privacy, he won’t be tracking data and there will be no ads.

It’s release is set to be this December, particularly timely – though unintentionally so – with the UK Parliament passing the Investigatory Powers Bill, also known as the Snoopers’ Charter, on November 16th. The Bill will come into effect after receiving Royal Assent.

The Bill legalises a range of surveillance tools that give the government the ability to intercept millions of UK citizens’ communications. It was passed despite criticism from privacy advocates and major technology companies, including Apple.

If even one person uses it and it makes a difference then I couldn’t ask for more
— Alex Kontos

Kontos said all of the records for people using the Aegis browser, which encrypts traffic, would be “garbled information”, “nonsensical”, and of no use.

But one of the requirements of the new Bill is for Internet companies to log every user’s web browsing history for a year. Several public agencies can access this information, in some cases without a warrant.

“I completely disagree with what’s been passed,” Kontos said. “It’s a bit of a bad situation. I’ll try and fight it if I can, but I’m just one person.”

Aegis is also designed for people under repressive regimes like China and Iran, so journalists, campaigners, and activists can maintain their privacy online without fear of reprimand from the state.

It’s set to run on Tor, which is a popular way to protect online anonymity but is known to be slow. To make things faster, Kontos is planning to set up a private network modelled on Tor, with servers hosted in countries like Iceland and the Netherlands, where he says there won’t be the risk of censorship.

“If even one person uses it and it makes a difference then I couldn’t ask for more. Hopefully I’m not trying to fill in shoes too big because I’m just one person and I don’t want to have my plate too full,” he said.

He sometimes still feels daunted by the popularity of the Waterfox web browser that has around 6 million downloads, and which he coded at the age of 16 purely because he wanted a faster Internet browser.

Born in Cyprus to a Cypriot father and Romanian mother, his interest in computers was sparked by his father, a programmer. He remembers sitting in front of a BBC Micro with his father at age 10.

At 20, he worked on developing a charitable search engine, where half of the ad revenue from searches would be split with charities. He said it “crashed and burnt in typical start up fashion” but has taken it as good learning experience for his current project.

He’s now put his heart into building an indie web browser that can help protect people’s privacy.

“I figured I’ll put everything I can behind working and doing something good,” he said. “I’m stressed most of the time, but it’s a good kind of stress.”

John McAfee on the Erosion of Privacy and Freedom

Software developer John McAfee at the Epoch Times headquaters in New York on Nov. 16, 2016. (Benjamin Chasteen/Epoch Times)

NEW YORK—John McAfee, who created the world’s first antivirus computer program, VirusScan, in 1987, and became a news sensation in 2012 when he was on the run from the law in Belize, gives a sobering view of how we are allowing technology to slowly erode our privacy, and with it, our basic freedoms.

“People are missing the fundamental truth of privacy,” said the McAfee Associates founder, in an interview with Epoch Times. “Governments, phone companies, and Google would like us to believe that if we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear. That is an extraordinarily naive understanding of privacy.”

When you go to the grocery store and meet a new clerk, do you tell that clerk all the details of what you did the night before? asks McAfee. What about your bank problems? The mortgage on your house?

When you leave the store, maybe you bump into an acquaintance, and with this person, you make small talk about how their family is doing. But you don’t divulge to this person the level of information you would to a close friend, he points out.

“We have a social structure and order and process for such interactions, and they involve very limited choices,” McAfee said.

We have different levels of trust for each person we encounter, and the amount of personal information we divulge is based on this level of trust. Privacy, he said, is built by the “constant decisions and actions that each of us makes thousands of times per day.”

Privacy is complex. It’s not as simple as ‘I’ve got nothing to hide therefore, I’ve got nothing to fear.’ If everyone knew everything about everyone else, there would be riots in the streets.

McAfee views privacy as “the glue that holds our society together.” There’s the understanding that if we all divulged every detail about ourselves—our deeds both good and bad, all of our political views, all of our thoughts and opinions—it wouldn’t be our similarities that stick out anymore, but rather our differences.

The human race tends to be as judgmental as it is loving, he said. If people knew the misdeeds, betrayals, and bad thoughts of everyone around them, it could lead to riots in the street.

“It is the negative qualities that require privacy in order to have a smoothly functioning society,” McAfee said.

The idea that sharing information and ideas online would somehow help people to better understand each other has been proven false by the divisiveness now on display. “We just had election riots in the streets. Does any of that dialogue matter? No.”

For all that people can exchange ideas online, the level of debate is far from functional. McAfee believes people are judgmental and fixed in their opinions. “If I like Trump, then there is nothing that you will tell me about Hillary Clinton that will change my mind.”

He said reality differs from the optimistic view that sharing information about ourselves online can bridge differences. “All of these pie-in-the-sky hopes for technology, I don’t think will be achieved.”

As people divulge their deeper ideas, people with different views are often left feeling offended. The divulging of information, in this case, is leading to calls for the online censorship of rival viewpoints and information. Twitter’s recent purge of alt-right political commentators could be seen as a worrying precursor.

The Information Dictatorship

The idea of a single authority having control over information, the ability to discredit ideas and opinions, and the ability to censor at will, brings prospects that McAfee believes we as a society should find deeply concerning.

We’re already seeing this, as major technology hubs like Facebook and Google become both the storehouses of our personal information and the choke points of information we are able to receive.

“Google has prohibited power, has unconscionable power,” he said.

Many people take Google search results as fact, but overlook the sources of that information, and how Google selects which to put at the top of the list and which to bury. The next dictator, McAfee said, “will not be a political, head-of-state dictator.”

“It will be,” he said, “the dictator of information.

“What I choose for you to believe, understand, know, or to fight for is the ultimate power.

“Who has that vault of power? Right now, it is Google.”

In the endless barrage of information, the challenge becomes knowing what is fact and what is fiction.

“The fake and the real cannot be distinguished if one person controls the delivery of the truth.”

Any information filtered by that person, he said, is going to be colored by their own prejudices and judgments, no matter how kind the person may be.

Big Brother Through Big Data

People also underestimate the significance of the data they generate, said McAfee. Beyond the bits and bytes stored on smartphones, people leave a wealth of information behind with every website they visit and every purchase they make.

Everything from Facebook comments to phone calls leaves data to be harvested.

“It’s every interaction of your life in the electronic world,” McAfee said.

He believes the rapid erosion of privacy, and the corporate collection of our personal data, is threatening society in a fundamental way.

“I see this headed in a direction that will cause a major collapse of the social order,” he said.

Our personal data is being traded, used, and monitored. Businesses like Google are using it to serve us advertisements. Companies are using it to understand our behaviors and personal interests. Governments are using it to watch for threats, or to prosecute us if we step out of line.

What I said 10 years ago is happening. What I said last year, it’s happening. But it doesn’t make me less of a lunatic.

McAfee noted that most great military leaders were great because they could predict the actions of their enemies. Now we are divulging data that can be used against us, in just the same way, right down to our most basic activities, interests, opinions, and beliefs.

“The goal of every dictator has not been absolute power,” he said, “It has been absolute knowledge of the populous, because a dictator who knows everything about you—where you are, who you’re with, what you’re saying—that man will never be unseated. This has been the search of all dictatorships since Adolf Hitler.

“This is George Orwell’s ‘1984,’ where you re-write history every day. This is the horror.”

As we enter a new the world of big data and the loss of privacy, there exists a power of dictatorship unprecedented in human history, an ability for a government to know the intricate details of its citizens, and shape their reality according to its machinations.

“This is that combination of what the dictator knows about the individual, and what the dictator allows the individual to know about his or her reality,” he said.

“We are standing on the edge of a cliff, teetering.”

The Key to Attention and Engagement

What is the secret of getting a person’s attention? Why do some people seem to be able to get anyone to take their call, while other people seem cursed with obscurity? Resuming My Couch To 5k Training – Learning To Run

I started this journey way back in 2013 with my Couch to 5k training and my dusty treadmill and unfortunately this category on my blog has remained lonely with only 2 posts in it for the past 3 years.

But now I’m eating well with WildFit, I feel great and have loads of energy, plus I’m way better at committing to things now – I decided to take it up again.

I think last time I only documented the first workout of week 1 and probably didn’t manage to get much further than that: Couch-to-5k – Week 1 Workout 1 Conquered!.

This time though, I WILL FINISH IT! No promises I’ll actually be able to run 5 kilometres at the end, but I’ll give it a damn good go.

So yah, I started again. Started with walking at 3.2 mph and jogging at 5.2 mph – not too bad. Got a good sweat on and heart rate maxed out (my Fitbit Charge 2 arrived just in time!).

Resuming My Couch To 5k Training

It’s a good work-out, nicely paced and with 3.2/5.2 mph I find it very manageable to complete. The first week has you going about 2.6km in 28 minutes.

Fitbit Charge 2 - Couch to 5k

I’ve actually complete 3 weeks of the program now and am starting my 4th (tomorrow night will be Week 4 – Day 1) and I haven’t missed a single session yet, plus I’ve completed them all.

My speed is up as well, now I’m doing 3.4 mph for the brisk walk and 5.4 mph for the jogging sections (the past week had 2x 3 minute jogs – which was pretty intense).

Couch to 5K Training

It’ll be interesting to see what the coming week brings, I can definitely feel the difference in my cardiovascular fitness, stamina and ability to run. It helps a lot of Badminton (which I try to play at least twice a week) – and burns insane calories (1500-2000 in a 2 hour session).

Definitely getting thinner, fitter and healthier every day!
