The long-awaited sequel to the '90s classic is going to be an action-packed ride
More than 20 years after the original, Sony has dropped the first trailer for the Jumanji sequel, starring former Men’s Health cover star and future president Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Instead of a board game, the immersive medium this time around is a video game console. Four high school teens on detention end up playing the game and winding up inside of it, becoming The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan.
A nerdy teen becomes The Rock’s Dr. Smolder Bravestone, a football player named Fridge becomes the tiny Hart’s Franklin “Mosee” Finbar, a Hermione-eque teen becomes Ruby Roundhouse, and a popular girl becomes Jack Black’s Professor Shelly Oberon.

It still remains to be seen who Nick Jonas plays, but what’s clear is this is a big departure from the original Robin Williams-starring film that graced the childhoods of ‘90s kids everywhere. Plunging into the jungle, the Jumanji sequel should be even more action-packed while showing where Williams’ Alan Parrish was trapped for years. And by taking on a video game setting, it’ll poke fun at tropes in the medium—which explains Karen Gillan’s widely criticized short shorts.
Look out for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to hit theaters in time for holiday nostalgia on Dec. 20.
